Understanding Divine Nature
We are daughters of a Heavenly Father who loves us, and we come to earth with certain inherited qualities that make us divine in nature. The value Divine Nature is a part of our heritage as a literal offspring of God (Acts 17:29). "That by Him and through Him and of Him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants there-of are begotten sons and daughters unto God" (D&C 76:24). We are born of mortal parents into a mortal body, but our spirits are immortal, thus giving us two parts: the spirit that comes from God and is divine in nature, and our mortal physical body that is carnal in nature. We therefore, have a physical self as well as a spiritual self. Our spiritual natures guide us toward "all things pertaining to life and godliness," whereas our bodies, or our physical natures, plague us with the worldly temptations of the flesh. President David O. McKay explains our two contrasting natures:
"Man is a dual being, and his life a plan of God. That is the first fundamental fact to keep in mind. Man has a natural body and a spiritual body. In declaring this fact the scriptures are very explicit.
"And the Gods formed man from the dust of the ground, and took his spirit (that is man's spirit), and put it into him; and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul" (Abraham 5:7).
